Migrating to a New Blog

I'm pulling the trigger on tumblr to host my blog. It may end up a failed experiment, but for now I like the look and the options they have. I'm also taking the opportunity to rename. The new title comes from a Bob Dylan song.

New Zealand Trip Part III

2/20 Friday Day 9 – Cold But Not Thirsty. With an open day to start exploring Queenstown and nothing but rain our options were a little limited. We rode up the huge gondola where I might have gone bungee jumping if not for the river boarding. We also went to a place called the Minus 5 Bar. Basically you pay NZ$30 to stand in a room of ice and drink one alcoholic or two non-alcoholic drinks. Awesome?

2/21 Saturday Day 10 – Turning a Corner. Here is where we start getting into my favorite part of the trip. We took a ride on one of the last coal fired steamboats about the lake near queenstown then hit the road for the west coast, which if you are planing a trip to New Zealand I would say is where you want to be. We were tempted to stop every few miles by a waterfall or some footpath over a bridge into fern gulley. It was pretty magical. We ate dinner in Haast. A place with three options on the menu, taxadermy on the walls and a string of music videos on starting with Twisted Sister "We're Not Gonna Take It." We spent the night in the Campervan (the only night with all four of us) in the town near the base of Fox Glacier.

2/22 Sunday Day 11 – Glacial Tramping and 10,000 Waterfalls. This was my favorite day of the trip. I booked an excursion with a group that does glacier tours and spent 4 hours on the ice. One of the more surreal experiences of my life. It was pouring rain. The Franz Josef glacier (just up the road from Fox) is one the fastest moving in the world at about a meter a day and it's pushing right down into the middle of a rain forest, so in addition to the ice time, I spent about 2 hours tramping the the forest, fording streams created by all the rain. Also thanks to the rain, the glacier has been wiped clean of slush so it was clear and smooth, and the there were hundreds of waterfalls where on a typical day there are only a few.

After I got back we took the campervan of to Greymouth, apparently the known as "The Gateway to the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand." More amazing waterfalls on the way. Once we got there we went out the ocean where miles of quivering foam had washed up.We staked out a room at a campground where Adam was summarily dumped by his New Zealand girlfriend via text message. We went out to drown our sorrows at the only place open, McDonalds.

2/23 Monday Day 12 – Pancake Rocked. We continued out journey back to Wellington stopping off at the famous, beautiful and apparently mysterious pancake rocks. We continued to Nelson, one of the bigger citties on the South Island. Feed tried to get us to eat at a liquer store before he realized what it was, but that's about all Nelson had to offer by way of excitement. We rolled in to Picton in time to catch a late night ferry back to Wellington. Sensing suckers, the guys sitting near us on the boat offered to deal us into their card game, but we played Carcassonne instead.

2/24-26 Days 13-15 – Welling-town. Despite Adam's best efforts we ended up with a few days to kill in Wellington and decompress, which was nice. We hit up Weta, the place where adam works making 3D models for Peter Jackson. We saw Botanical Gardens including a tree you could literarlly sit on top of. We did zip lines in two different parks. I did quite a bit of shopping at the favorable exchange rates. And we ended it all with our flight home, landing 2 hours after we left.

New Zealand Trip Part II

2/16 Monday Day 5 – Here Comes the Sun and the Opera House. After a rainy day in Wellington and some rainy days in Sydney we finally caught a window of blue sky. Adam, Tom and I took advantage and hit Bondi beach. It was a short few hours in the sand, just long enough to get sunburned and slapped into the sand by a massive wave, but it felt like the first true escape from Seattle winter.
Later that night we hit the Sydney Opera House to see a performance by Gidon Kremer and the Kemerata Baltica. It was pretty standard string orchestra set up and they played a nice mix of modern and classical. We were in a box surrounded by tourists, and I got a little sleepy, but it was nice. Later that night I caught some additional live music across from our hotel. It was a band doing among other things a cover of “Viva La Vida,” by Coldplay and “Glitter” by Fuel I think. Not quite the same caliber, but still enjoyable.

2/17 Tuesday Day 6 – Here we Go Again. With the half day we had before leaving for Sydney we decided to try to our luck with the Sydney Tower. Once we were inside we found the ride up the big elevator also comes with a ticket to a 3D motion ride. After the Wellington experience we were a little hesitant, but fortunately this time there was no associated aches or pains. After a quick flight across the ocean.We ended the evening watching rugby in a casino in Christchurch.

2/18 Wednesday Day 7 – Off to see the Queen. We burned half in the day in Christchurch picking up the Campervan, the rugged road warrior that would accompany us throughout the rest of the trip (for better or worse.) We also made pilgrimages to two holy places before leaving town: 1. the Anglican Church established by the original utopians around the turn of the century (Tom, Adam and Feed waited in the car), and 2. The top rated photo shop in New Zealand. We left Christchurch around 3 p.m. and spent the rest of the day driving to Queenstown through the Utahesque terrain dotted with sheep and the occasional, “impractically blue” lake. In Queenstown we elected to bifurcate so Tom and Feed could sleep in a hotel and Adam and I would sleep in the Campervan parked outside the hotel.

2/19 Thursday Day 8 – Mistakes and Misteaks. At 8:30 a.m. the next morning a knock came at the campervan door. “Ad, I think there’s trouble.” I could tell by the sound of the knock. Let’s just say we had to park a little further away from the city for the rest of our time in Queenstown.
Since Thursday looked to be the one nice day of weather in Queenstown, the adventure sports capital of New Zealand, I opted to go Jetboating and Riverboarding, which turned out to be a huge mistake for a few reasons. 1. After more time there it was obvious a flight to Milford Sound, which doesn’t happen in the rain, should have been the priority, and 2. I strained my neck riverboarding and wasn’t able to go bungee jumping the next day. 3. While I was Riverboarding Tom, Ad and Feed found a place to go lawn bowling with a bunch of old dudes. Dinner was also a rough go at this place we were all excited about called the Beefeater.

Here's a bit of what's been going down so far on this little trip of ours.

2/12 Thursday Day 1 - The Arrival. We stumble into in to Wellington, after many hours of flight only to find we lost Wednesday. We sleep in Ads deluxe apartment, hit the Te Papa national museum and almost loose our respective lunches on what maybe the worst 3D motion ride in either hemisphere. We also apparently experienced the worst rain the city has seen in some time, but it was still fun.

2/13 Friday Day 2 - Sydnaaay. It's a four hour flight from Wellington to Sydney for those like me who thought everything was close together at the botton of the map. We Checked into a hotel in Chinatown and all instantly fell in love with the city. As feed said, it's a city that rewards exploration. Stores, clubs, restaurants and interested/attractive looking people everywhere.

2/14 Saturday Day 3 - Manley Snooker. With our first full day in Sydney we went to Manly island, a "must see" that I would class as a "could miss." Although if it were a sunny day I could see how the beaches might be more lovely and hopping. We hung out in a club for a bit, played snooker then made it back to the city for an Italian dinner surrounded by valentining couples and groups of single women then walked around Darling harbor and Chinatown. We also purchased ukelele's. More to come on that.

2/15 Sunday Day 4 - Sabbath of Discontent. Unfortunately the Syndey LDS young singles branch seemed very unidicative of the city. We fled after Sunday school to hit a pho place we'd spotted the night before then wandered around Darling Harbor some more a bit and found a highly recommended recommended Thai place, Longgrain for dinner.

Libby is my favorite

Yesterday was a 9 hour travel day for Tricia, me and the two babies. There was some ups and downs, but for the most part we stayed in the zone and had a pretty good time. One saving grace was the iPhone. While we were in line and waiting on the plane I kept Libby entertained by streaming classic Sesame Street clips. Rockband Extravaganza

Friday night was the Rockband Extravaganza at my newly painted house. I was a little worried for a while about turn out, but we had seven four-man teams competing. Rhubarb Legacy came out the undisputed champions. They had several ringers and just about doubled the second place team in the finals. Below are the two venues, the top is the studio, my second bedroom, and the bottom is the front room.

Four Stars for Ugly Sweaters

The ugly sweater party I was planning on attending on Saturday Night was moved at the last minute to the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Seattle. Turns out a guy in the ward’s company had paid for the event, but could hold the party, so they gave 50 meals the Mormon, who they knew would have friends who wouldn’t run up the bar tab. The entire drive there Tom was saying it was too good to be true. The steak was one of the best I’ve eaten, and I’m interested to play the white elephant gift game I got (pictured below). It seems to involve lots of touching.

Turkey Bowling

I hit up the YSA Turkey Bowl this weekend in Husky Stadium. We had

The protests that started in California and moved to Utah made it to Seattle today . In Utah there were 2000 people, we had maybe 50 outside Stake Conference. Most of them were pretty polite and said "good morning, shame on the church."

Copeland in Seattle

Tom and I went to see Copeland this week at the urging of some friends I met at Arby's, and after downloading some tracks and really enjoying them. It was a pretty phenomenal show. They have had 4 albums or so, but from what I've heard the newest is the best. I particularly like "Strange and Unprepared" (see the video I took below) and "The Grey Man."

Halloween as St. Francis

It may not be creative, but it was step away from the rapper attire (my costume of choice since 2003), and still baggy enough to keep me feeling like a thug. BYU Volleyball in Wisconsin

I went with some friends to see the BYU ladies take on the Wisconsin women. When you and your friends constitute the entire cheering section in a room full of opposing fans you feel certain obligations (to be loud) and you get certain perks (like front row seats in the BYU sections, and the occational nods from team). I will say I the team performed better when they were on our side, but in the end we were not victorious.

Our Own Special Olympics

We had an ice-blocking Olympics for the Madison University Ward, which was pretty phenomenal, minus the hives and sneezing that came from the weeds we were riding through. I was proud to represent our neighbors to north, but disappointed with only a silver in the slalom. Lots of people were shooting video, unfortunately I wasn't one of them. Farewell Old Friends-A Tribute

Those who have known me well over the past 14 years may have known these speakers. They have served as part of my personal stereo, as a mixing console, as a band PA system, as party speakers, and most recently as the power behind a stake dance DJ set up. They traveled across the country once, but sadly will not be crossing again. Repairing the blown woofer was more than they were worth (original price $10 at Deseret Industries), so I left them with St. Vincent De Paul on Saturday and I leave them with this brief tribute. It's been a good run.

Wisconsin State Fair

Summer in Wisconsin is phenomenal. I think mainly because people are so happy it's not -10 that they take full advantage of every moment. One of the supposed crown jewels is the Wisconsin State Fair, known especially for creme puffs. And they don't kid around, they have an entire building.

Also I had to throw this in. This device is good for lots of things as the sign indicates. It was also purchased by a member of the Randall family a fair circa 1992 and we thought it was amazing. Apparently it's kind of a fair thing. There were about 4 booths selling them.

Barcelona and back to France

Barcelona

Barcelona is Gaudi town. Lots of nice moderism including Park Guell (top two pictures) and the Sagrada Familia. Gaudi spent the end of his life working on the cathedral and a hundred years later and it's still in progress. And what was I singing the entire time we look at these? "We're From Barcelona" of course.

One thing I like about the modernists is their obsession with natural light. This is the stained glass ceiling at the music palace. It's a little blurry cause I had to take the picture on the sly.

Best part about Barcelona. We rented a moto and went all over the city.

Beauvais

Typical European male fashion. This from a store in Beauvais, near Paris. I have tried to incorporate as much pink on pink into my wardrobe as possible since returning.

Inside the Beauvais Cathedral. It is supposedly the tallest gothic structure ever attempted (160 ft. in some places, 20 ft. higher than Notre Dame) and it fell at one point so they have internal supports.

Southern France

We probably had the most fun on this leg of the trip. We started in Marseille, where we flew from Paris from there we went through Avignon to Montpellier by train then to Nimes and Carcassonne via rental car. (We would eventually take a bus to Spain to as to cross off all forms of transportation.)

Marseille

Arab Market surrounding the obligatory European triumph arch. Lots of Arabs and people of other ethnicities in this Port town. Kate has some better shots (although not all at the link) of the harbor and the Chateau d'If, where the Count of Monte Christo was fictionally held.

Kebab. This was my second that day from the same place.

Avignon

This is the Pope's palace at Avignon. Kate opted not to go inside and enjoyed the gardens. I thought it was facinating. The Popes were homed here during the 14th Century due to some issues with the Italians.

Montpellier

Kate and I met up with our friend Hillary in Montpellier where she was working on some sort of econ research. The city gets extra points for being famous for fountains made of moss.

We rented a car, which took some convincing since both Hillary and Katelin and have been driving with me before. The car we rented was supposed to be a Twingo (pictured) but instead we got a citroen C3, similar but not as good a name, thus not pictured.

Carcassonne

We went to Carcassonne mostly for the board game (secretly I was hoping they would be selling it everywhere ... they weren't), but it ended up being our favorite place on the whole trip. We were told it is one of the best preserved medieval cities in the world. Kate also has some great pictures of this place.

Pictures from Paris

We've all seen great pictures of the Eiffel tower and the Louvre (if you are feeling deprived, please download this application and type Paris into the Fliker search bar, it's amazing). Here are some of my favorite moments.

Immediately Katelin stumbled onto something that looked like home. We opted to eat crepes with nutella instead.

La Défense pictured above was probably my favorite place in Paris this time around since I had already been to the typical places. It's basically a giant box/office building big enough to fit Notre Dame inside the hole. We went to the top and they had a museum on the history of technology including this hard drive, which fit something like 32K.

Finding bathrooms was always a problem. I can attest to the statement from this photo taken in a mall on the Champs-Élysées. They also sold silver plated toilets seat and patterned toilet paper inside to subsidize the 1.5 euro per person entry fee.

Trip to Europe

I have out of the country for the last two weeks without computer, without smartphone and for the most part without the internet. I was starting to get a little jittery toward the end but after some time syncing my task lists, downloading drivers and catching up on my favorite blogs I am feeling much better. The trip of course was amazing. I was hoping to get more pictures posted as we went along, instead it's all after the fact. I hope you enjoy them, and Please leave comments if you feel so inspired. Lots to see in Seattle including the Zoo, Aquarium, EMP (Experience Music Project), Science Center, a harbor cruise and the Space Needle. We decided to do it all, which only in retrospect seems crazy.

Not having mastered the "and not or" personal finance philosophy, Trish shows her angst about the $16 we paid to get 600 ft. over Seattle.

This is my new set up, the Numark iDJ. I got pretty excited after an invite to do a young adult dance and did some online shopping. I can fade between the two ipods or two external soures, so I have a computer to the right an a turntable to the left for scratching. The dance went off pretty well. It was the first time I'd scratched, but I thought it sounded pretty good. The sounds levels. however, pushed the speakers I have had since I was 16 to the limit and I think it may be time for some new ones. I also purchased the spinning light you in the top of this picture. I think I am getting a little ridiculous in my old age.
